Dr Chris Carpenter
Dr Chris Carpenter relocated to Coventry in July, 2004 from Vancouver, Canada where for 15 years she was a faculty member at the School of Rehabilitation Sciences, the University of British Columbia (UBC). She maintains her Canadian connections through ongoing research and the honorary positions of Clinical Associate Professor at UBC and Adjunct Professor at McMaster University, Kingston, Ontario.

Chris was educated as a physiotherapist in Liverpool, England and later received her masters and doctoral degrees in Educational Studies at UBC, Canada.

She has extensive clinical experience in intensive care and rehabilitation settings primarily working with individuals with spinal cord injury. Through these experiences Chris came to recognize and value the education component of clinical practice as much as the more tangible 'hands-on' knowledge and skills and the ethical dimensions of rehabilitation practice.

Chris has been involved in education planning and teaching in physical therapy and interdisciplinary courses at the university, developing and facilitating clinical education for physical therapy students, professional in-services and continuing education courses, and conferences. She developed and taught an interdisciplinary WebCT course ‘Facilitating Learning in Rehabilitation Contexts’ (2002-2006) which is part of an online Masters in Rehabilitation Sciences program jointly offered by UBC and McMaster University. She is also an Associate Editor of Physiotherapy Canada and Co-Editor of Advances in Physiotherapy Research.

Chris' research interests focus on the individual experience of spinal cord injury in the community and aging with a disability and recently she has been primarily involved in conducting research collaborations with disability advocacy organizations. She is also the co-author of three books; Using qualitative research: A practical introduction to occupational and physical therapists (2000), Qualitative research in evidence-based rehabilitation (2004) and Qualitative Research in Occupational and Physical Therapy: A practical introduction (in press).
